Vietnam ‘65
The year is 1965 and the ground war in Vietnam is in full swing. As the commander of the U.S. Army, lead the fight against the rebels to secure the Ia Drang Valley on the border with Cambodia.
To gain the support of the local population, you will have to find and eliminate Vietcong insurgents who are using the Ho Chi Minh trail to destabilize the situation in the province by intimidating civilians, planting mines and ambushing your troops.
The rebels also have a stronger brother, the North Vietnamese Army. This well-trained, conventional army has far greater ambitions than the Vietcong, wanting to take total control of the valley, a bridge to the reunification of North and South Vietnam under communist rule.
The North Vietnamese Army conducts operations across the border, originally seeking to support the insurgents and planning an offensive when the time is right.
To accomplish its mission, coordinating ground troops, special forces, artillery, mechanized units, training local troops, and using airborne units is crucial, but winning the support of the local population is even more important. With a greater willingness to cooperate on the part of the local population comes intelligence support, a key factor in the conduct of the war.
War is not fought in isolation, so as the commander of U.S. forces, you will have to deal with the complexities of managing support for the war effort from your home country, if you lose the support of the U.S. people, you will also lose the war itself.
